matzner-presenting-2014Over 30 years ago, the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) provided the framework for funding one project in each of Virginia’s Health Planning Regions (HPR). Health Planning Region III had a committee which identified quality, accessible, and affordable training as a high need for professional development in southwestern Virginia.

The HPR III Training Institute became known in the region for high quality training. Overall, it has flourished because it meets the regional needs of behavioral health and intellectual disabilities staff serving in both public and private settings. It particularly continues to be a primary resource for professionals needing credits for LCSW and LPC licensure, as well as Substance Abuse Certification.

Over the years, attendees have underscored both the need and appreciated the service of many committee members. The members’ enthusiasm, zeal, and consistent energy - as well as fiscal support primarily from the Community Services Boards within HPR III - made the project a “GO.” Ron Rasco, a Training Center representative, offered outstanding leadership
in the development of the Institute while serving as the
chair for nineteen years.
